The debate about whether the British National Party (BNP) should be allowed onto BBC Question Time boils down to whether or not you really think that people in a democracy can make up their own minds on complicated issues. If the answer is “no” then we really do have a problem much bigger than the BNP. The BNP believes in forced expulsion of all those living in the Britain not from Britain (i.e; not of Anglo-Saxon or Celtic racial backgrounds) and leader Nick Griffin is a holocaust denier amongst other things. Worryingly, the party has picked up local council and MEP seats in recent elections. The BBC is right to put this man and his party in front of the cameras, other politicians and crucially a participating audience. They are a brutal and nasty fact of life in this country and the best way to minimise their impact is to highlight what they really stand for. Sixtysecondview is a series of occasional one minute viewpoints. Initially they were all video interviews with figures from business, media, government and NGOs on topics of the moment with a public relations or public affairs flavour.
But this proved too restrictive so I use the keyboard now too, but I do try and keep them short so that it will take the average reader no longer than a minute to get through.

I agree. The BNP has been hiding-out with some success on the internet. But out in the open they will be exposed. Banning them would help them. It is a shame that we have such a problem to deal with, but we do. So for once (ok, more than once) well done BBC!

Why shouldn’t the BNP have their say on national TV? They have just as much right for ‘free speech’ as all the other parties do. So why do people get worried? or try to hush them up?…..is it because they are scared the ‘truth hurts’..or so they say!
