Let’s Be Facebook Friends

Jeff Jarvis just posted on the Facebook ‘let’s be friends’ phenomena. Anybody own up to similar conversations to the one below or am I the only one who blunders around like this?
Thanks to Stephen Davies for this one.

Love that message exchange you’ve posted above (and it’s very humble of you to do share it for our amusement!)
On a serious note, I think it’s worth thinking about what you’re going to be using different social networking sites for. I use LinkedIn for professional contacts and will happily add someone as a contact if I’ve only met them once / exchanged business cards with them. Facebook for me is more about *social* social networking - my contacts there are people I know well / people I’ve worked with / people I’m reconnecting with from places like school and university.
But everyone has there own way of approaching these things and at the moment I don’t think there’s any right or wrong way - so some blundering is inevitable. I do hope you and Karim have some fruitful interaction on Facebook though
I know what you mean, but I find that the division between social and work doesn’t really exist as it used to. I’m still not sure what Facebook is “FOR” for me, though it is weirdly compelling.
I added a girl who I knew from working in Cyprus a few years ago and she sent me a “who the hell are you” message. I had to jog her memory.
I agree about the fine line between social and work. Initially I joined Facebook intending to use it as a more fun/social platform (a place where I can have a laugh if you will) but it seems my personal/professional contacts are merging. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing. The jury’s still out…
That’s a great email exchange btw.
I am not usually one to read the “will they won’t they IPO” type posts, but this one caught my eye this mornng on the subject of Facebook. Very interesting:
